Where East Meets West
Growing up in an Asian household while being educated on Western values has inspired Chloe's appreciation for cultural integration. As such, Chloe embraced the opportunity to combine herbs from the East with compounds from the West, paving the way to October Beauty's founding.
While the awareness and recognition of traditional Chinese medicine have come a long way in the healthcare industry, its integration with Western practices has fallen behind. In pharmacy school, Chloe was surprised to learn that acupuncture, specifically acupressure, was already portrayed in the pharmacy books as an alternative to a few over-the-counter solutions! Not only did she learn about acupressure points, but Chloe also studied the benefits of other common, well-known Western ingredients such as ceramides, squalane, and beta-glucan. Little did Chloe know that the last piece of her formula would originate from family's tradition.
For nearly 20 years, Chloe has been using her family's homemade face mask formula as a staple in her skincare routine. Out of all the herbs used, Bletilla striata is the one plant that has proven to have potent antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory effects. Many people use the herb's seeds, berries, leaves, barks, and flowers, but roots are where most of the nutrients are being absorbed and regulated for the delivery of nutrients into the whole plant. Therefore, Chloe extracted and purified the roots of Bletilla striata into each jar of moisturizing cream. The result? A skincare product that effectively combines the benefits of Eastern and Western ingredients, forming the ideal, complementary relationship.
